About this blog

IMG_3550I created Rare Gems to share my experiences and insights on being a parent of a child with specials needs. This blog is intended not only for the parents and loved ones of children with disabilities and other special health care needs, but also for those seeking to better understand children with special needs and the lives of those who care for them.

Why is this blog called Rare Gems?
I feel that all children are “gems.” However, our special needs gems are not “cut” quite like any other gem in the world. Whether it’s an extra chromosome, autism, a missing chromosome or a learning disability, our rare gems need extra special help to learn, grow and thrive.

  1. Hi Angie:
Have you heard about Bookshare, the online accessible library free for U.S. students with qualified print disabilities?

This is a resource partially funded by OSEP, the Office of Special Education U.S. Dept of Ed. Parents of children who are blind, have a vision impairment, a physical disability or reading disabilities that makes it difficult or impossible to read standard print should check this resource out. Thanks!
